The Army’s Medical Communications for Combat Casualty Care organization is getting ready for the day when mobile devices may be fielded to soldiers.  MC4 is preparing for the eventuality that remote, computerized training modules could be loaded on iPads, iPhones and Android-based devices.

Mobility is one of the emerging technology trends identified by Gartner in its recent Top 10 strategic technologies for 2011.  Gartner predicts that the global market for enterprise mobility will exceed $168 billion 2012. Also a recent survey by CIO.com highlights that significant percentage of IT leaders are including towards mobile solutions.

The City of Columbus, Ohio is utilizing Wireless Matrix Corporation’s FleetOutlook Silver service to help improve efficiency of field vehicles in its Department Public Utilities. The  City is implementing the FleetOutlook Silver service for GPS tracking, and deploying Wireless Matrix devices, providing integrated GPS and wireless data communications for the solution.

Zurich has signed up Trimble to provide telematics for the insurer's new fleet risk management scheme Zurich Fleet Intelligence.  Trimble will offer its telematics devices to Zurich customers looking to cut fleet operating costs and reduce crashes.

Today, lab tests can take several days to complete, but in a couple of years a handheld device called an acoustic wave biosensor might sample a droplet of your saliva to reveal within seconds whether your doctor’s hunch was correct.  Just three of these biosensors, developed by the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center and Sandia National Laboratories, currently exist, but the invention has been licensed for development, garnering enough buzz to have made R&D Magazine’s Top 100 list for 2010.

The healthcare industry is among the fastest growing handheld device markets, and was expected to increase by 7 percent to $8.8 billion last year, according to Kalorama Information.  A report from the Medical Group Management Association, based on a survey of 1,324 primary care and specialty practice members, found significant financial benefits to using an electronic health records system.

iOS is taking another step into the medical world with the handyscope case/app combo, which effectively turns the iPhone into a dermoscope for checking potential spots of skin cancer.  The handyscope case slides onto an iPhone, lining the camera up with an LED-lit magnifier, allowing dermatologists to capture photos of patients’ moles, zoom in up to 20x and send the photos off for a second opinion.

Experts are predicting revenue from the global medical device market will surge to $312 billion in 2011, according to Kalorama Information.  Key drivers for the surge in the global medical device market include demand for healthcare services in emerging nations, the need to reduce hospital stays and the aging work population.

Technology’s role in the construction industry will likely accelerate in 2011 and beyond. This may include more widespread adoption of high-tech gadgets in the field—such as smartphones, tablets, and other handheld devices—as well as software and cloud-based solutions to automate tasks such as bidding/estimating and customer-relationship management.
