Mobile banking and mobile payments were pegged as two of Bank Systems & Technology's ten game changing tech trends for 2011. Consumers everywhere are flocking to banking services on smartphones, over text messages or through mobile browsers.

Mobile banking use is expected to soar by nearly 55 percent un 2011. While 17.8 million consumers used mobile banking last year, 27.4 million are expected to use it in 2011, and 53.1 million consumers are forecast to adopt it by 2013.

In app payments are now accounting for half the revenue generated for iPhone applications. Thirty-four percent of iPhone app revenue is now coming from "free" apps which later charge for extra features.

Consumers want mobile payment options and are willing to switch carriers to have them. Fifty-seven percent of consumers are interested in having mobile payments on their phone and 90 percent would pay for the service.

Bigger merchants are breaking free of the confines of the cash register with mobile technology originally designed for mom and pop stores. For larger retailers, the payments benefits to portable card readers go beyond a simple increase in smartphone accessibility for customers.

Although few consumers make purchases using their phones, smartphones are playing a critical role in purchasing decisions. A recent study, which surveyed 10,000 visitors to top e-retailer sites, found that 11 percent of them made a purchase using their phones this holiday season, compared to only two percent at the same time last year.

In 2010 mobile shopping activity began to have a noticeable influence on e-commerce sales. Then, during the holiday season consumers discovered that mobile phones helped them to stay within their budget and be more efficient in checking off the items on their holiday shopping list.

Consumers continue to use mobile technology as a shopping tool. Throughout December, 5.6 percent of all site visits were initiated from a mobile device, a 19 percent increase over November 2010. Further, 5.5 percent of all online retail sales came from mobile devices, a seven percent increase over November 2010.

Mopay Inc., a payment service provider for online merchants forecasts considerable momentum and movement in the global mobile payments industry in 2011. Mopay attributes this increase to increased consolidation and lower transaction costs.

China Banking Corp. has launched its own brand of speed banking for people on the go with the debut of China Bank Online for Mobile – a mobile-optimized version of China Bank’s award winning internet banking service.

While the ATM was once the symbol of cutting edge banking technology, today’s customers want to manage their transactions from their mobile phones. More than 13 percent of households accessed their bank account via a mobile device in the second quarter of 2010. That’s up from 11.6 percent during the first quarter.

Bank of America plans to expand a mobile payments trial it is conducting in New York to include San Francisco and Atlanta this quarter, according to Michael Upton, the emerging channels capabilities executive at the Charlotte, N.C., company.
