More PayPal customers are using its payment service from their mobile phones. eBay’s payments unit in 2010 nearly tripled its eBay Mobile gross merchandise volume to $2 billion from the previous year, driven by strong holiday shopping.

AT&T aims to drive awareness of mobile bar codes and the services it provides to companies that want to use them within marketing collateral via a business to business campaign that combines sight, sound and motion on Apple's iAd platform.

Apple plans to introduce services that would let customers use its iPhone and iPad computer to make purchases using NFC, said Richard Doherty, director of consulting firm Envisioneering Group.

At Starbucks stores throughout the U.S., the cashier can now scan your phone to deduct payment for your latté from the balance on your pre-loaded Starbucks card. Splitting the dinner bill with a friend?  Download Bump, and you can beam over the cash from your PayPal account.

PayPal, a unit of eBay, processed $700 million in mobile payments in 2010. While that's a small fraction of the more than $70 billion a year PayPal handles, it's an increase of almost 500 percent increase over the prior year's $141 million mobile total.

Many credit card lenders are hoping mobile payment systems will become a viable purchasing option, and new research says following Japan's lead may help American companies further expand the technology in the U.S.

Google is building a mobile wallet nicknamed "Cream," which it plans to integrate with Android NFC phones that consumers could tap to pay in stores.  Among banks showing strong interest is U.S. based Citigroup.

Some financial institutions such as PayPal and MasterCard have issued some customers adhesive chips for their phones. The credit card information is stuck to the phone and can be used at any of the 200,000 contactless readers in stores around the nation.

Over the last two years, the idea of using your mobile phone for cash transfer has really been taking hold.  With even very basic phones having the capacity to be used for payments, the United Nations is gathering information on how it can use mobile payments to further its public works around the world.

The arrival of 2011 has seen the launch of the UK's first access all areas banking app for iPhone users.  First Direct's new Banking On The Go app was launched on the apple app store on January 13 and so far it has been downloaded almost 10,000 times.
