January came and went without an iPad 2 unveiling, thus it’s time to start rumors about a February announcement.

The tablet PC has hit its stride.  Yankee Group released its first ever global tablet forecast, predicting total global revenue from tablet devices like Apple's iPad and Samsung's Galaxy Tab will increase from $16 billion in 2010 to a whopping $46 billion in 2014.

Pocketgear, a major name in mobile application stores, has announced a rebranding and shift in focus.  It will now become Appia, a company focused on offering a white label app store platform for mobile operators, handset manufacturers and other mobile portals.

Apple's growth looks to be slowing down as the App Store begins to reach a saturation point on smartphones, while Nokia's Ovi Store and Google's Android Market blossomed during 2010 by multiples of 7.2 and 8.6 times their 2009 size.

Most mobile phone owners in the U.S. still have only a feature phone, but eMarketer predicts smartphone ownership will rise from 31 percent of the mobile population this year to 43 percent by 2015.  Nearly 110 million Americans will have a smartphone by the end of that year.

Research by Informa Telecoms and Media finds that global SMS traffic is expected to increase to 8.7 trillion messages in 2015 from 5 trillion messages in 2010, signaling a big opportunity for retailers and marketers alike.

iPhone and iPad are still the leaders of the pack, but Android smartphones and tablets are gaining large amounts of developer interest.  Google has nearly caught up to Apple in smartphones and is closing the gap on tablets.

In a recent survey of 700 Verizon smartphone owners by uSamp, 54 percent of those currently owning either a BlackBerry or an Android phone said they were at least “somewhat likely” to switch to an iPhone 4.

Android knocked Symbian from the top spot for the first time, according to recent numbers from Canalys.  Shipments of Android smartphones reached 32.9 million, while devices running Nokia's Symbian platform trailed slightly at 31 million worldwide.
