Electric wall sockets in Britain haven't changed since the BS1363 standard was laid down in 1947, but Sony wants to reinvent them with RFID technology and authentication capabilities. The Japanese technology giant has created a prototype of a "smart socket" that can track energy use by different appliances, limit power consumption by time, user, or device, and even refuse to supply electricity to plugs that haven't previously been "authorized".
